  • COO

Vance M. Benton, Ph.D. has been serving in the urban public school system for over 25 years. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Vance graduated as an honors student from Cleveland Public Schools. After earning a full athletic scholarship to play football at Kent State University (KSU), Vance graduated from KSU and traveled to Columbus, Ohio where he started his teaching career in Columbus Public Schools. Quickly discovering that a master’s degree was essential, Vance headed back to KSU in pursuit of a master’s degree in education while also teaching in Akron Public Schools.

Earning a master’s degree in 1998 afforded Vance the opportunity to be an assistant principal at a charter school in Akron, Ohio. The desire to return to Cleveland led him to a teaching position in the public school district he graduated from. His leadership qualities were quickly noticed after being promoted to the assistant principal (AP) during his first year with the district.

During his tenure as an AP, Vance served in all grade levels (K-12). Two years as a deputy principal prepared him for the challenge of starting an alternative high school in the district that targeted 9th-10th grade, at-risk students. Eventually moving on to serve as a small school principal, his career came full circle as he returned to his Alma Mater, Glenville High School, to work as a building principal.

In 2011, Vance took on a position with Baltimore City Public School System to become the first Black principal in Patterson High School’s 72nd year of existence. His vision and innovation have seen the school grow into one of the most diverse student populations in the state of Maryland. His mindfulness program, and other school initiatives, have been showcased in several different media outlets across the country and the globe.

As a result of his dedication to mindfulness supports, in 2023, Vance became the Chief Operating Officer for the Holistic Life Foundation.

In addition to his career in education, Vance is a motivational speaker, self-published author, and Certified Life Coach. He and his wife Kimyada have been married for 23 years, with three children, four grandchildren, and a 6yr old Shar-Pei named Ziggy.

Since 2017, this avid Hip Hop fan has been indispensable in our mission to support underserved students and community organization leaders by infusing SEL into their current program structures and guiding them on the impact of secondary trauma and the importance of anyone working with students to incorporate self-care for themselves while equipping their students with the social and emotional skills needed to identify and work through that trauma.
