20+ years of mindfulness, connection, empowering community, health, commitment, love

The Holistic Life Foundation (HLF) is a Baltimore-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to nurturing the wellness of children and adults in underserved communities. HLF is run by BiPOC and demonstrates a deep commitment to learning, community, and stewardship of the environment.

Established through social entrepreneurship in response to the need for mental health services in underserved communities in Baltimore, HLF currently works with 5,000+ Baltimore City Public School students on a weekly basis. The organization's goal is to improve social, community, educational, and emotional outcomes in low-income, underserved communities by providing multi-faceted programming that empowers youth, families, and adults through yoga, mindfulness, and human and environmental health.

HLF's socio-emotional behavioral curriculum encourages youth and young adults to develop their inner lives through yoga, mindfulness, conflict resolution, teamwork, restorative practices, self-care, and to appreciate the value of learning, community, and stewardship of the environment.

Founded in 2001 by brothers Ali Smith and Atman Smith and their good friend from college, Andres Gonzalez, HLF began teaching yoga and mindfulness practices to at-risk youth in their community. Since then, the organization has expanded to teaching private and group classes to students of all ages, demographics, and levels of experience. They have authored and piloted two curriculums, as well as many workshops and training sessions. HLF teaches their own unique blend of many styles of yoga, mindfulness, and other self-healing practices.

Since its inception, HLF has served more than 100,000+ youth and adults through yoga, mindfulness, and environmental-based programs and trauma-informed training. The organization is also committed to developing high-quality evidence-based programs and curriculum to improve community well-being. These programs have been facilitated in many different settings, including schools, detention centers, drug treatment centers, mental illness facilities, recreation centers, group homes, colleges, senior centers, and wellness centers across the nation.

90% of HLF’s original mentoring cohort graduated from high school, and 100% are in school or working.

HLF has been recognized locally, nationally, and internationally, and their innovative and effective work has been featured in multiple media outlets, including nationwide print, television, radio, and podcasts, including Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News, PBS, Mindful Magazine, Yoga Journal, CNN, CBS, O the Oprah Magazine, and The Washington Post, to name a few.

HLF has established national and international programs and been keynote speakers at national and international conferences.

HLF has achieved worldwide success and accolades through diligence, professionalism, skill, and authenticity. Our Mindful Leaders embody these virtues and practice what they teach daily with the HLF senior staff. They hone their mind and body to be highly effective pillars of change within the community through the practice of mindfulness and yoga.

In 2022, HLF created a multi-year strategic plan and began working with the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) to expand to other underserved areas across the United States. CGI works with established organizations to develop Commitments to Action to address climate resilience, health equity, and inclusive economic recovery and growth. Aligned with health equity, our goal is to implement our Mindful Moment program in a minimum of five new cities by the end of 2023 and the potential cities include: Madison, Richmond, Philadelphia, Dallas, Denver, Chicago and Buffalo.

The Holistic Life Foundation's vision is to continue creating a generation of healthy, supported, mindful students with the knowledge, access, and support to be successful in life.

  • ‘HLF is doing some of the most positively transformative work happening in our country’s inner cities. While delivering an assortment of after school, mentoring, environmental education, and leadership training programs, HLF is changing the lives of the youth in their Baltimore neighborhood using a combination of yoga, mindfulness, and pure love. And their work doesn’t stop when the young people leave school, as HLF’s teacher training prepares graduates to deliver the HLF programs to other schools and neighborhoods. Andy, Atman, and Ali’s work should be a model for communities across the country.’

  • 'They love the children, they love the community, and they are an asset to Robert W Coleman. There are some children who have anger management problems. The yoga program has enabled those children to do meditation techniques and instead of them reacting and getting angry, they’ve learned how to meditate and redirect their anger.'

Carlillian Thompson | Principal, Robert W Coleman Elementary School

  • 'The kids are changing before their very eyes and Baltimore is a better city because of their work. Knowing how yoga has helped me synchronize my mind and body and build resiliency, when I saw young, inner-city Baltimore youths sitting on yoga mats practicing mindfulness, I immediately wanted to see that in cities across the nation.'

  • These guys are my heroes. For years, they have brought meditation and yoga to the children of struggling communities in Baltimore — work that repeated rounds of scientific research have shown to be immensely beneficial.

  • 'HLF programming has opened the eyes to many educators and administrators in the Gary, Indiana public school district. The students, parents, and staff in our district have all experienced trauma pre pandemic. Behaviors in all of our school buildings can be very difficult to manage. When Ali, Andy, and Atman presented mindfulness to our district and Ross and Ramon and Candace followed up through the residency programs our adults got to see how important taking a moment just to breathe is to help the students regulate their emotions. Many come to school each day very heightened emotionally. The lessons taught are fun, informative, and though students would try to disrupt their work, the HLF staff took it in stride with a sense of humor and prevailed every time! I especially loved Ross's "Simon Says" as a way to reinforce the importance of concentration (he always got them with the first request!), Ross made 1 on 1 connections with students and specifically helped one of our high school students from being restrained by security (it only took empathy and 3 minutes of breathing by the way) and Candace was a powerful force encouraging students to strive for self-regulation because they deserve it! I am so proud to call these people friends and it has been my goal since I met them in 2016 to bring their work and the benefits of this knowledge to every student and adult I am in contact with. Humor, knowledge, empathy, love are a powerful force against the negative effects of trauma and HLF embodies those words heart and soul.'
